Why is Goal Setting Important?

why is goal setting important

Why is goal setting important? Would you drive to an unfamiliar place without a road map? Well then, why on earth would you try to do something you have never done without first, a goal? Goals are simply roadmaps for your dreams. If you want to know how to get where your going, you’re gonna need a map.

I read a book once titled “If you don’t know where your going, you’ll probably end up somewhere else.” That’s exactly what setting personal goals is all about. It’s charting your road map for success.

A road map (your goals) to your final destination (your dreams).

What I want you to do, is think about the last long trip you took. O.K., now, did you plan out your trip or did you just get in the car and drive, hoping you would arrive at your final destination by chance? If you are anything like me, you had a map, knew exactly what roads to take, how long it was going to take you to get there, approximately how much gas money you were gonna need and possibly charted the best pit stop options.

Goal setting works the same way. You need to know where your going, how to get there, how long it will take you, how much it will cost, and what resources you have or need to acquire to make it happen.

Once you have this roadmap or goal in hand, then you can confidently move forward in the direction of your destination or your dreams. Without this roadmap, you will probably end up somewhere else. Have you ever made a wrong turn and found yourself in the wrong neighborhood? The same can happen with your dreams. Without a goal, you are likely to make several wrong turns and find yourself somewhere you never wanted to be.

Why is goal setting important? You tell me.

More benefits to setting personal goals

  • Goals give you back control: When you know where your going then you are in the drivers seat.
  • Goal setting gives you confidence: With goals in hand, you can be confident in the direction you are going.
  • You will make progress in achieving your dreamsWhen you are in the driver’s seat and you know where you are going, you can visibly see the progress you are making and that will keep you motivated to keep driving on and soon enough you will have your dreams in sight. (are we there yet.)
  • having goals helps you make better decisions: When you know how much time you have to get to your final destination and exactly what it takes to get there, you are more likely to make better decisions.
  • Goals keep you focused: Having a goal or a map keeps you focused on the road ahead.
