positive phrases, positive words,
and positive thoughts

Aren’t positive phrases the same as positive daily affirmations, you might be asking? The answer is yes and no. Yes, positive affirmations are positive statements, but there is more to being positive than just reciting affirmations.

While affirmations are certainly a big part of positive thinking, and I recommend them highly, I would like to talk to you a little about those things that are not constructed as affirmations.

Some people believe that if they recite affirmations, while being negative, in other aspects of their life, will still gain them positive results. This is not the case. There is also the myth that if you are optimistic you are practicing positive thinking. This is not true either.

Yes, positive affirmations are a good start, but you have to be positive in your daily routines as well. You have to know you are going to have a good day, and when the day is interrupted you have to continue knowing the day will be a good one. Don’t let some little headache cause you to loose a day and then think, “Oh well, I’m saying positive affirmations so tomorrow will be better.” No, you have to do it right then. Make today the day. Use positive words to make a difference right now, not tomorrow.

Now, what do I mean when I say, being optimistic is not practicing positive thinking? Those who are seen as optimistic will make statements like, “Oh well, tomorrow will surely be better” or “I didn’t get this job but, I’ll just keep trying, I will get the next one.”

Is that really positive thinking? NO!!! it’s not. It is the sign of someone who wants others to believe they are positive yet, deep down they don’t believe it. Oh’ well nothing. You have to take command and say this isn’t the job I wanted, I’ll get the one I want. Then, and here is the important thing; you have to believe it, you have to know it. This is where the positive thoughts come in.

So, yes, positive affirmations are important and yes they are positive statements but, you can not rely on them alone. What you say throughout the day is just as important as reciting your positive daily affirmations. So, make a conscious effort to use positive phrases in your daily life.

But positive words, are still just words

Some of you reading this may be thinking, “what’s the big deal, aren’t words just words. They don’t really have any power.” If this is you and you think words have no power. I want you to think about that little girl who’s classmates make fun of her because she doesn’t have the latest fashions or because she is over weight. What does this do to her?

What about the last time someone praised you for doing a good job? How did you feel? Did you do an even better job the next time? Most of us do, because let’s face it, we all love to be liked and we all love to feel like we are doing a good job.

Do you still think words have no power? I didn’t think so.

It is true that words alone may not do much but, the fact is we all attach emotions to words and this is where the true power lies. It is not just the positive phrases that you recite that are important, it is the emotions you attach to those words or phrases also. So, when you are incorporating these positive phrases into your life, be sure to be in touch with the emotions you attach to those words. This is what makes words positive or not.
