Goal Definition:
What are Goals?

Goal Definition: The end result or achievement in which effort is directed, is a goal.

Well, this is how the dictionary defines a goal. The truth, however, is that a goal is the first step in making your dreams a reality.

The difference between a dream and a goal is that a dream is simply a fantasy, something you daydream about, but never actively pursue. A goal, on the other hand, is a concrete thing in which you set into motion the steps in which to obtain it.

So, why is setting and achieving goals important?

Without a goal, we are just dreamers. Now, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with being a dreamer, I am a dreamer myself. The difference is that I am not just a dreamer. I make things happen.

How do I do this?

I set goals. Then I set more goals to accomplish the other goals. Confused? Don’t be. All I’m saying is that you can set large goals that are easier to manage, if you have tiny goals that help you reach the bigger goals. I’m not gonna go into this right now because you can read more about this on some of the other pages on this site.

goal definition What you need to know is this: If you want to stop being a dreamer that never accomplishes anything and if you want to be someone that makes things happen, then you need to be setting and achieving goals.

Getting started by setting personal goals

If you are new to goal setting, then it is a good idea to get your feet wet with a few small personal goals. It is important that you achieve success early on in order to keep you motivated long enough to accomplish your big goals.

Once you have accomplished these small goals, then you can move on to slightly larger goals and then to bigger goals until you have made all your dreams come true.

212° The Extra Degree captures the essence of excellence in an unforgettable way...At 211° water is hot. At 212°, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. The one extra degree makes the difference.

Examples of small personal goals

  • Sending out appreciation cards to those in your life that matter to you.

  • Drinking one less can of soda a day.

  • Finally getting your credit report to see where your credit stands.

  • Making sure to tell your kids you love them at least once a day.

  • Taking your lunch instead of going to the drive-thru at least once a week.

These are just a few examples, but you get the idea. Just remember setting personal goals doesn’t have to be a big deal, start small and slowly make progress. It’s getting started that is important.

Setting smart goals

Look, all goals are smart goals. What is important here, is that the goals you are setting need to be important to you. If they aren’t, then you will not be motivated to attain those goals and if you don’t attain your goals then you will stop setting goals and then what? You guessed it. You’re nothing but a dreamer who doesn’t make anything happen.

A smart goal is a goal that is important to you that you can get motivated to achieve.

So now ask yourself what your goal definition is.

My goal definition is this. A goal is my dreams set on fire by that first step to action I take to make those dreams a reality.
