Full Serenity Prayer
And Other Popular Versions of
The Serenity Prayer

full serenity prayer Most of us are familiar with the serenity prayer, but few of us know the full serenity prayer. On this page I have included both the full version and the condensed version as well as an alternative version or other popular version. I have also included a few fun facts about this popular prayer just for the fun of it.

Full Serenity Prayer Version

God, grant me the Serenity
To accept the things I cannot change…
Courage to change the things I can,
And Wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His will.
That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
Amen.

Short Serenity Prayer Version

God, grant me the Serenity
To accept the things I cannot change…
Courage to change the things I can,
And Wisdom to know the difference.

Another Popular Versions of The Serenity Prayer

"O God and Heavenly Father,
Grant to us the serenity of mind
to accept that which cannot be changed;
the courage to change that which can be changed,
and the wisdom to know the one from the other,
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen."

Fun Fact about the Serenity Prayer

Did you know that the serenity prayer is the most popular prayer in the world. It was given world renowned fame by the popular Alcoholics Anonyms in the 1950’s and then by other 12 step programs.

It is not known for sure who wrote this prayer, but the popular belief is that it was Reinhold Neibuhr. Neibuhr however, claims that he in fact did not write it, but instead Friedrich Oetinger, an 18th century theologian, wrote this ever popular prayer.

Whether you use the full serenity prayer or the shortened version doesn’t really matter. The prayer itself though and the meaning behind it are what make it so popular and why we will continue to be popular throughout the ages.
