Why Goal Setting Is Important
The habit of goal setting and reaching those goals has immediate and continuous rewards. We, as humans, are created in a way that, when we reach a goal, we respond in a positive way. We are happy, we are gratified and we are motivated. Getting started may be the biggest task, but once we begin, that feeling of happiness and gratification keeps us pushing our boundaries further and accomplishing even more.
When we complete a task or reach a goal we feel energized. This feeling of energy comes because when we accomplish an important goal, our brain releases endorphins. These endorphins create a natural high and because of this natural high, we are more confident, positive and creative. This is why we continue to push our boundaries and achieve even more.
Though the above is true, only about 3% of adults have clear, written goals. Did you know that those three percent actually accomplish five to ten times more than those who do not have clearly defined, written goals? Education doesn’t matter, intelligence doesn’t matter, and life circumstances don’t matter. The bottom line is, if you have clearly defined your goals and you have written them down, then you are likely to accomplish more than 97% of everyone else.
Writing your goals down on paper gives your goals a tangible form. They are now physically reachable. Writing them down has given you the opportunity to see and touch them. Before a goal is clearly defined and put onto paper, it is nothing more than a fantasy or a well meaning wish. By writing our goals down, we give them life.
It is true that the simple act of writing your goals down alone will not get you to where you want to be, but it is the first step and every journey begins with a single step. Those people who take the first step are ten times more likely to take the second step and then the third. I don’t know about you, but if the act of writing out my goals means I will be ten times more likely to accomplish them, then I’m writing down my goals!
Don’t take my word for it, though. You can research any great leader or inventor and see that they followed this very simple rule of writing down there goals. Walt Disney, Henry Ford, Tomas Edison all wrote their goals down. You may say that these are the exception and you could never compare yourself to them, but here are a few things you might like to know before making that judgment. Walt Disney was fired by a Kansas City newspaper for lacking creativity before creating what we now know as Disney. Henry Ford grew up on a farm and later worked as a laborer in a machine shop before inventing the assembly line and Thomas Edison discovered over 10,000 things that wouldn’t work before he created the light bulb.
The reason goal setting is important is because without clearly defined goals, we are only dreamers, wishing on a shining star. With them, we are on the verge of greatness!
